An infertility test is usually performed on people who have tried to conceive, but have been unable to get positive results. There are different groups of people who should consider having these tests done:

1. Women who have abnormal periods and excessive bleeding and have not been able to become pregnant.

2. Men who are not able to ejaculate and not able to release sperm.

3. Women who are in the age group of 20 to 35 and have tried to become pregnant without the use of any birth control and have been unsuccessful.

4. Women who are over the age of 35 and have not become pregnant even after no birth control measures have been taken.

Types of infertility tests:

There are different kinds of infertility tests that can be performed and they generally include a preliminary physical check up, blood or urine test and semen analysis.

Once the preliminary examination is over, then further tests may be initiated which may include ultrasound, laparoscopy, endometrial biopsy. Some of these tests are very simple and have little or no side effects while others like laparoscopy are more invasive and can cause some pain.

The infertility tests that are performed help the physician and the infertile person in many ways:

1. The tests identify the cause of infertility: this is an essential aspect because detecting the accurate cause will help the physician to focus the treatment on the specific condition.

2. Through an infertility test it is possible to assess the severity of the condition causing the infertility. This has a role to play in the decision about the duration and strength of the treatment to be provided.

3. Tests are sometimes repeated at regular intervals in order to identify the progression of the condition or disease, to observe if the disease is responding to the treatment and to assess the improvement.

As can be seen infertility tests play a major role in providing the right diagnosis and therefore have become a necessary requisite in the life of a person who is infertile and wants to conceive. It is also obvious that a single infertility-test does not usually provide enough information because the causes of infertility are many, but through several tests it is possible to identify the source of infertility and provide the appropriate remedy giving the woman a greater chance of becoming pregnant and fulfilling her dream of becoming a mother.
